Learning From Home Renovations

Although I am not a professional contractor, I have worked with more than a few during my 40 years as a homeowner. In fact, I have had 3 kitchens, 7 bathrooms, and 2 master bedrooms renovated over the years. Because some of the experiences were a breeze, I found myself addicted to customizing my homes. If you are thinking about getting a little work done on your home, it is a good idea to learn as much about construction as you can. After all, how will you choose a new garage door opener if you aren't familiar with the different types? Understanding the materials and how to choose a contractor might streamline your renovation.

Addressing Questions About Two Common Pests That Impact Air Conditioning Systems

Your air conditioning system is critical for ensuring that your home does not get too hot during the long summers. However, these systems can be the perfect target for a variety of pests, and if your system develops an animal or insect problem, it can cause severe problems for the home and inefficiencies with the air conditioning system. Not surprisingly, many homeowners have little idea of how to handle a pest problem with their system, but learning the following answers to two common pests problems will help you to know how to handle these issues when they arise.

What Can Be Done For Ants Around The Exterior Unit?

Ant infestations are among the more common sources of insect damage that air conditioning systems will sustain. These insects are attracted to the moisture that forms as condensation around some of the components of the system. Over time, these ants can clog the internal motor, puncture hoses and cause a host of other issues. Luckily, ridding your system of this problem is not particularly difficult or complex.

One of the most effective ways is through the use of pesticides that you spray around the colony. However, the air conditioning system can spread these chemicals throughout your home, and you may not be comfortable with this risk. An all-natural alternative is to simply pour boiling water on the nest. When using this approach, make sure that you pour enough water to thoroughly saturate the nest because if you fail to kill the queen, the colony will likely return.

How Do You Deal With Squirrels In The Ducting?

Another routine issue for homeowners involves squirrels in the ducts. These small animals can destroy the interior of your home's ducts, and they can also leave droppings that may make your home smell foul. Unfortunately, these animals are rather intelligent, and this can make it exceedingly difficult to block or prevent these animals from entering your ducts to escape the summertime heat.

Fortunately, there is an option that you can use to keep these animals at bay without having to resort to dangerous chemicals. It is usually possible to buy coyote urine pellets at your local hunting supply store, and you can place these pellets around any exterior vents that your system has. The squirrels will assume a coyote lives in the area, and they will tend to avoid it. While you will need to apply new pellets every few months, this can be the best option for homeowners that are constantly battling this problem.

Pests that invade your home's air conditioning system have the potential to cost you serious money from air conditioner services repair bills. Also, these pests can significantly lower the comfort inside your home through a variety of ways, but it is important for you to understand there are steps you can take to prevent or correct these infestations when they develop. By knowing your options for dealing with ants and squirrels, you will be able to address two of the more common sources of this problem.
